Guaranteed sun, golden-sand beaches and the island's biggest concentration of hotels, parks and activities. El Médano, Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos, explained.
The south sits in the shadow of Teide and the central mountains, which hold back the clouds carried by the trade wind — which is why it rains far less here than in the north, almost all year. That simple, geological reason is what turned this strip of coast into the island's main tourist area: imported-sand beaches, the South airport a step away, and Tenerife's two big theme parks.

Frequently asked questions
With 2–3 days you cover El Médano, Costa Adeje and one of the main beaches without rushing. If you want both theme parks in full, allow a whole day for each.
Costa Adeje has the most upmarket hotel offer; Los Cristianos and Las Américas are cheaper with more nightlife; El Médano is the most local and least touristy option.
Yes — Costa Adeje and Playa de las Américas combine shopping centres, seafront promenade and beach in the same built-up area, with no need for a car.
Most of the main beaches in the south (Duque, Fañabé, Torviscas) have golden sand, partly imported. For black volcanic sand you have to go to El Médano or cross to the west.
From Costa Adeje, Los Gigantes is a little over half an hour away — the gateway to the west of the island.
